I'm just in the process of writing the "El Paso" chapter of Marty's biography, "Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins." Bobby Sykes was also on the El Paso recording. He and Jim Glaser provided the trio voices.Diane Diekmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14281847657966074072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32767667.post-1360705325916318262009-08-06T18:17:26.774+01:002009-08-06T18:17:26.774+01:00Grady Martin didn't used a "nylon strings...Grady Martin didn't used a "nylon strings" guitar while recording "El Paso" . He is an absolute master and vastly underrated. It takes a Hell of a mastership to sound " Nylon" while using metal strings.Another tidbit about Grady is that he is the one playing fiddle behind Hank Williams singing " Hey Good Looking" , one of his very few footage.
chalouni.jean-marc@orange.frAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32767667.post-89104547352598185302009-04-03T10:32:00.000+01:002009-04-03T10:32:00.000+01:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.sexyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08599896705331824297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32767667.post-7967717376811525412008-07-03T18:52:00.000+01:002008-07-03T18:52:00.000+01:00Thanks for a great piece of writing about one of m...Thanks for a great piece of writing about one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite artists.

>>It's hard to imagine how Columbia edited El Paso. Not so with his version of 'Maybellene', I think.

I have four of his earliest demo recordings on the Frankie Starr 'Elevator Boogie' CD and even as early as 1948, that beautiful voice is in full flow.

Regards

SteveAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32767667.post-10141410161647678172008-06-26T17:07:00.000+01:002008-06-26T17:07:00.000+01:00Me too. In the two years following "El Paso" he scored with "Big Iron", "Five Brothers", and "Jimmy Martinez". Then after three #1 hits with his own style of country music ("Devil Woman", "Ruby Ann", "Begging To You") he returned to Western again for "Girl From Spanish Town" and one of his very best "The Cowboy In The Continental Suit", which while peaking at #3, it spent eight weeks holding down that position in 1964.

1963's album *Return Of The Gunfighter*, while producing only one minor hit, "Old Red" in 1965, was very well received by fans and reached #6 on the album charts. One of his songs from that album "Man Walks Among Us" so impressed the great Bob Nolan that he recorded it himself with Marty joining him on a verse.

In '67 Marty got to #1 with "Tonight Carmen". In '69 the hit was "Camelia", and in 1970 he successfully revived the 1958 pop hit by Toni Arden, "Padre". After the #1 success with "El Paso City" in 1976 he took "Adios Amigo" to #4. A few records later he scored well with "All Around Cowboy" in 1979, 20 years after the original "El Paso".

Perhaps ironically, in 1962 Billboard permanently removed "Western" from their chart name so that it became just "Hot Country Singles". I glad Marty Robbins never permanently took "Western" out of his music.

Larry Davislarrydonlinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03431626373330823536noreply@blogger.com
